A well-informed public opinion is essential to the growth of political and social awareness. Only those who are informed can comment intelligently on their nation’s development and only by such comments can errors be corrected and progress stimulated. Media is considered to be the fourth pillar of democracy, the other three being Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary. The system of checks of balances which is followed among the other well-known pillars, media also keeps a check on the functioning of the three independent organs of government to keep the whole lot intact. Two basic assumptions underlie most research on agenda-setting: One, that the press and the media do not reflect reality, they filter and shape it; and two, that media concentration on a few issues and subjects lead the public to perceive those issues as more important than other issues.
